How to wash Karhu sneakers in the washing machine

Sep 17, 20254 min read

Are you looking for a clear answer about washing Karhu sneakers in the washing machine? In short: Washing the machine is rarely a good idea, especially because of adhesives, cushioning, and delicate materials like suede. In this guide, you'll learn when the washing machine is truly off-limits, how to wash Karhu shoes, what alternatives there are, and how to properly care for models like the Fusion 2.0, Legacy 96, and Fusion XT.

Short answer: Karhu sneakers in the washing machine?

We generally advise against washing Karhu sneakers in the washing machine. High humidity, friction, and high temperatures can loosen adhesives, damage cushioning, cause colors to bleed, and ruin upper materials like suede or nubuck. Hand washing is better with lukewarm water, a mild detergent or special sneaker cleaner , a soft brush, and a microfiber cloth. Always remove laces and insoles before cleaning, use a small amount of water, and gently pat out any dirt. Let everything air dry; never tumble dry.

Material check: Which Karhu materials can tolerate what?

Depending on the model, Karhu uses material mixes of mesh, canvas, suede, nubuck, smooth leather, and synthetic overlays. Not every material reacts the same to water and friction. This overview will help you decide.

material Machine suitable Recommended care
Mesh/Canvas Rather not Hand wash with mild detergent, brush gently
Suede/Nubuck No Dry brush, nubuck eraser, sparingly waterproof
smooth leather No Damp cloth, leather cleaner, then care
Synthetic overlays Rather not Mild soap solution, soft cloth
EVA/PU midsole No Clean with cloth and cleaner, do not soak
Reflectors/Applications No Only clean selectively, avoid friction

Mesh and Canvas

These fabrics appear robust, but are absorbent. Too much water and spinning promote fading and adhesive problems. It's better to clean specific areas, allow the foam to work briefly, and then rub out with a little moisture.

Suede and nubuck

Particularly sensitive. Water leaves marks, and the texture can mat. Work dry with a crepe brush or nubuck eraser. For stains, use minimal foam and pat dry immediately.

smooth leather

It tolerates moisture better, but not the washing machine. Use a slightly damp cloth and a leather cleaner. Then keep it supple with leather conditioner and protect it from moisture.

Soles and adhesive joints

EVA or PU midsoles and glued areas are the weakest points when machine washing. Avoid soaking and heat; clean the sole edges separately with a cloth and a little cleaner.

Gentle hand washing step by step

  1. Remove the laces and insoles. Soak the laces separately in lukewarm soapy water, then rinse and air dry.
  2. Brush dry dirt off the upper, tongue and sole with a soft brush.
  3. Mix the cleaning solution: lukewarm water plus a little mild detergent or sneaker cleaner.
  4. Using a soft brush or microfiber cloth, work the foam into the hair using circular motions. Do not soak.
  5. Gently treat soiled areas several times, removing occasionally with a slightly damp cloth.
  6. Briefly wipe the inside with a slightly damp cloth. Do not submerge the insoles in water.
  7. Absorb excess moisture with kitchen paper or a microfiber cloth.
  8. Air dry at room temperature. Loosely stuff shoes with clean paper, changing the paper as needed.
  9. Finally, apply a waterproofing spray , depending on the material. For suede, only use suitable sprays.

If it still has to be the washing machine

  • Only as a last resort and exclusively for textile-heavy, insensitive uppers.
  • Preparation: Remove laces and insoles, brush off coarse dirt, and place shoes in a laundry bag.
  • Gentle program cold 20-30 degrees, max. 400-600 rpm, short running time.
  • Wash with old towels to cushion blows.
  • No fabric softener, little liquid detergent, no bleach.
  • After washing, shape immediately, stuff with paper, and air dry.
  • Never use dryer, heater or direct sunlight.

Dry and maintain shape

Drying time determines shape and durability. Always let Karhu sneakers air dry at room temperature. Loosely stuff them with paper and replace it as soon as it becomes damp. Avoid any heat source. After drying, check the lace channels and glue joints, waterproof them as needed, and only reinsert insoles when everything is completely dry.

Stains, odor and white soles

  • Spot stains: Apply a little cleaner to a cloth and dab gently instead of rubbing.
  • Refresh the white midsole: Use a dirt eraser or mild cleaner and a cloth, then wipe dry.
  • Combat odor: Clean the insoles separately, wipe the inner shoe with a slightly damp cloth, and air overnight. Alternatively, use an odor-neutralizing spray.
  • Prevention: Regularly clean the surface and waterproof before first wear.

Model Notes: Fusion 2.0, Legacy 96, Fusion XT

  • Fusion 2.0 : A common material mix of suede, leather, and mesh. Machine wash prohibited. Hand wash with minimal moisture, dry brush suede.
  • Legacy 96 : Similar mixed look with vintage details. Clean as with the Fusion 2.0, wiping the sole edges separately.
  • Fusion XT : A technical, sporty look with more synthetics. However, hand washing is recommended, as the cushioning and adhesive areas remain sensitive.

FAQ

Can I safely put Karhu sneakers in the washing machine?

No. The risks to adhesives, cushioning, and delicate materials are high. Hand washing is the safe choice and preserves shape, color, and durability.

What is the maximum acceptable temperature if I use the machine?

Low temperature, ideally 20-30 degrees Celsius on a gentle cycle, with a low spin speed of 400-600 rpm and a short cycle time. No fabric softener, no dryer.

Can I put Karhu in the dryer?

No. Heat can cause warping, adhesive damage, and shrinkage. Always air dry at room temperature.

How often should I clean?

It's better to do light cleaning regularly rather than intensive cleaning infrequently. This keeps materials intact and prevents heavy soiling from occurring in the first place.
